A significant rescue occurred earlier this month in Campos Bay, Brasil where a rope access team operating for the IRATA applicant member, Gaia, responded to a request for assistance when two scaffolders working on the garoupa/pgp-1 Petrobras rig were left hanging high above the ocean when a bulldog brake failed. Answering the loudspeaker call for help, the rope team consisting of one Level 3 and six Level 1 IRATA-trained rope technicians was in place to complete the rescue in five minutes for each scaffolder.
Using established rope access techniques the Gaia team hauled the endangered scaffolders back to the main deck of the platform and, as a result, have been highly praised for their promptness and an efficiency by the national Brasilian oil operator, Petrobas.
